The main protagonist is a strong female role model, no fancy fighting and far from perfect, but she does do battle within herself while she investigates a death.
A role-playing game staged in the remote woods of the North East Kingdom, turns into a deadly pastime when a killer uses the game as a means to seize his victims.
A role-playing game staged in the remote woods of the North East Kingdom, turns into a deadly pastime when a killer uses the game as a means to seize his victims.
A dead body is discovered in the woods by Samantha Tremblay, a Forest Ranger who works at Maidstone Lake. The locals call her Sam. She swears to bring the killer to justice for the victim but soon finds herself in over her head, as she works alongside New Hampshire Trooper Zachary Gerard assigned to the case. More bodies turn up and motivation to solve the crimes mount.
Old secrets get in Sam’s way, and she isolates herself from others. Haunted by unanswered questions about the past, she lives with cracked relationships—between herself and her father—her friends. Mourning her mother, Samantha feels a pull toward her heritage, the Abenaki tribe, but is afraid to open that doorway. Could the tribe help discover the answers to her quest for the truth?
Pulled emotionally from all directions, Samantha Tremblay searches for answers to find a killer, and to discover herself.

Review of A True Gothic Tale
Within The Glass Darkly: Volume 1 of the Glass Darkly Gothic Vampire Series
written by William Gareth Evans
written by William Gareth Evans
This book is truly written with Gothic flare but can pass muster for today's discerning horror thriller reader. The atmosphere is an extra character, and the plot is well paced and challenges the nerves.
It has been awhile since a book in the Gothic genre has entertained me so well. The story rings true, all the expectations of an old-fashioned horror tale are met. Unlike the old books, this story held nothing back. The macabre was presented to the adult reader in an honest manner while adhering to the conventions of a real Gothic horror. Great scenes and descriptions of churches and Paris streets, developed characters with love interests and secrets, and let's not forget the heroes and villains who jump off the page.
Don't read this book in the dark.
I first read the short story Carmilla by J.S. Le Fanu since the author did get inspiration from that short story and used the character General Spielsdorf, as his protagonist, and the Karnstein brother and sister as antagonists. The author, William Garrett Evans, breathed new life into these characters and submerged them into a twisting plot that kept a good pace. The horrors were over the top, just the way we like our Gothic fiction.
I will begin the second book in the series, compelled to see what develops for General Theodore Spielsdorf and his new associates introduced at the end of the first tale. It suggests an even deeper, mystery with much more to come . . .

The Hitler Deception: A Tracie Tanner Thriller (Tracie Tanner Thrillers Book 4)
by Allan Leverone
Another exciting Tracie Tanner thriller, where the plot keeps rolling into another dimension of impossible, keeping the strong heroine, Tracie Tanner CIA secret operative, working through dilemmas, which she must overcome to survive. She is quick to assess her surroundings and the situations she finds herself in by her resourcefulness. The other characters in the story also have deep roots and feel real, giving the book great dimension.
As always dealing with her boss, CIA Aaron Stallings is problematic. Worse, her new assignment in Wuppertal, West Germany has pitfalls from the start. She is thrown into a situation where Intel is sketchy, there’s no time for even minimal planning, and reconnaissance is nonexistent. Tanner relies on her instincts to get the job done, but with her skills, that’s enough.
Her new partner, Matthias Gruber, is an unknown in the deal, but they decide to work together, both dedicated to get the job done**spoiler alert**—Eliminate Hitler.
Even more surprises arise, and the mission keeps morphing into something new to overcome, right until the very end.
It is evident that the author researched which adds to the validity. The outrageous claims seem imaginable, once the story unfolds. The tension is well paced throughout and hooks along the way, keeping the reader riveted to the pages. There are many punches enacted in these action scenes, but still with a reverence for saving innocent lives whenever possible, which I applaud.
I recommend this story for those who enjoy action-packed thrillers.

Series Review of Beck Casey Thrillers: Fallout, Final Epidemic and more-by author Earl Merkel
Wonder what makes a series successful?

Fallout (A Beck Casey Thriller)
Kindle Edition
by Earl Merkel (Author)
Always on the move. . .
Another great Beck Casey story that pivots in various directions, until multiple strings meet and intertwine for an explosive conclusion. Followers of the series would expect nothing less. The story melds many political threads, foes and allies. The reader will get a close look at the threats and motivations of the characters as the plot pushes forward. Never a dull moment, from assassinations, buildings blown up, to computer viral threats. Even though a genre spy story, there are some unique characters in this book, using friends to fill in the ranks needed to pull off this complex story; like mine, a bomb tech, shows up in chapter 63! The plot uses all forces, from CIA, FBI, Mossad, MI6 and more . . . Definitely an insane political ride with surprises at every step. A great political thriller for the serious reader.
My Review of:
Fire of the Prophet
Swept Away! Suspenseful Story
Fire of the Prophet: A Beck Casey Thriller Kindle Edition
Pow! The opening chapter is a shocker, and you are immediately swept into a scenario that keeps the reader wanting to know more. Vivid scenes, like in an action film, take you into the story that is relevant to current topics of today.
Earl Merkel brings the reader close to the action, of what could be real life situations, and your worst nightmare come true! He uses his words to paint realism into the story, a candid and raw picture, entirely human.
The characters are developed with great insights into the daily life and business of journalism, politics and the military. Tense, suspenseful, nerving, and nail biting action, fill the pages. The author uses powerful words, and visual symmetry, while keeping the story timeline organized and easy to follow along, with multiple viewpoints and plots that are all part of the bigger picture. The flow from place to place, person to person, is done well.
Merkel brings unique flavor when he writes about the military side of the equation. A clear picture of the trauma and urgency, the men and women in active duty must endure every day, brought a new appreciation for our brave soldiers. Touching scenes of families reaching out to each other are emotional and heartfelt.
I highly recommend this book for anyone who likes action, spy plots and a good look at the humanity (or lack of by terrorists) behind the scenes. I thank you Earl Merkel for writing this wonderful tale. This book will surely be a story you will remember.

Police detective John Davey once had everything—until bribery charges destroyed his career, his marriage, and his life.
Now he's been given a second chance. Davey is pressured into joining an investigation into the baffling murder of a wealthy Chicago couple savagely murdered before their North Shore mansion was set ablaze. To the city, it's a scandal. To Davey, it's overkill.
In the charred ruins, Davey finds clues to something more sinister than deadly premediated arson: a criminal maze threading back through history, and a connection to billions of dollars in artwork that disappeared during the Holocaust. As more victims emerge, Davey begins to suspect the motives of those he is forced to trust, with betrayal layered on betrayal, until he has no one left to believe in but himself.

The Law Of Unintended Consequences: A Faulk Carpenter Thriller
(The Faulk Carpenter Thriller Series Book 1) Kindle Edition
by Earl Merkel (Author)
I have this on my reader and will get to reviewing it soon. It's so exciting to read a first book in a new series.
Below is the blurp -
Pick up a copy if it interests you and we can discuss the story as we read it!
A college student, missing for three decades. The scion of a Miami crime
family, infuriated and sworn to bloody vengeance. A deep‐sea research
vessel, blown to atoms by a dynamite bomb, placed by faceless persons
who prefer the sea to keep its secrets forever.
And a visiting stranger, the unwilling nexus of this ever‐widening web of intrigue and violence, who arrives on the evening tides to seek out the resolution to long unanswered questions—that is, if he survives long enough to unravel it.
These are the elements that combine into a suspenseful narrative in The Law Of Unintended Consequences, and serve to proclaim an exciting new entry in the annals of today’s pantheon of reluctant heroes.
The Law Of Unintended Consequences is set in the scorching sun and sparkling shorelines of Northwest Florida’s Emerald Coast, where a tourist-playground façade scarcely conceals the ominous undercurrents of crime and violence both past and present.
For Faulk Carpenter, the quest for closure in Spanish Bay becomes its own odyssey: an often dark voyage that forces him to face his own demons, all the while he becomes prey to the law of unintended consequences throughout the obstacles, entanglements and dangers he encounters—both from others, and from himself.

Book Review of Delirium by J. F. Penn
A Great Story - A Great Series!
Delirium (London Psychic Book 2) (Kindle Edition)
Amazing intrigue!
The reader is immediately at the edge of their seat in the opening scene, where we witness Dr. Christian Monro's physical and emotional trauma while being murdered. We are brought into the death scene, each agonizing step of the way. The detail and the pace are excellent. The suspense is high voltage.
The protagonist Detective Sergeant Jamie Brooke once again is challenged with high stakes. As in the first book of the series, Jamie is going through hell emotionally after the loss of her child, but she is also engaged in the case and wants to understand the true crime. The heroine strives to remain objective while gathering evidence, hoping to see the truth. Along the way many twists in the case elude her, and attempt to veer her from the true crime. She follows the leads and takes the reader down a road of unexpected horrors. Jamie is not faint of heart, but a woman who makes the tough decisions; she is the protector of her co-workers and friends. There is hope - as she is faced with danger even in her most fragile hours, yet somehow finds the strength to prevail.
The subject matter of this novel immediately jolts interest -
the history of mental illness treatment and the reminder of abuse done to the mentally ill. This is a topic I too have strong feelings about, and so this story truly hit my heartstrings. The research was done well, as to be expected by this author who always delivers well developed background.
This story is not for those wanting a light read,
because the reader will be left with some concepts to think about - maybe even choices on how to view others who may not be as fortunate as most. In this world it is too easy to forget about those who suffer with mental illness. Society has swept them from public view, but we know in our heart that more needs to be addressed.
I thank the author, Joanna Penn for writing this riveting story and bringing this topic to the forefront.
To date this is my favorite of J.F.Penn's books. I truly enjoy reading about Jamie, and this is a great series.
Delirium is for anyone who enjoys detective horror thrillers, and is a definite must read.

A Great Scary Story (audio) & thoughts on Audio books
It's getting closer to Halloween!
My favorite time of year because it's acceptable to wear dark clothing, and it's the seasonal décor to have cobwebs in your house. No one thinks badly of you for liking horror stories this time of year. So on with the dark tales. I was surfing the net and found this wonderful tale. I wanted to share it - for anyone else out there who appreciates a good tale.
So turn up the volume and listen to this story - I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
Scary Stories : Don't Look Out The Window
Published on Jun 8, 2012 Scary stories to chill your bones. If you wish to see more of these tales in the future than please comment, rate, and subscribe. Illustrations are by Silvina Rinaldi and it is narrated by Kellie Fitzgerald. Stories are written by yours truly (Legends of Fear).
After hearing this recorded story it made me think more seriously about researching Audio books.
I began my search with LibriVox (public domain audio books) and audiobooks.org - both sites offer free books, a good place to begin the journey of getting to know the sound of a good story teller. Then I went to Amazon's acx platform which offers a way for any publisher to offer their book as audio. They have some good acx help posts for the newbie (like me). I think the key to a great audio book would be hiring a great storyteller.
Readers audition for the part in your book. They get paid by the job, or sometimes they can be offered a slice of your earnings (of course this works better for more seasoned writers with previous sales to back their offers). This got me to wonder how these readers are trained, so then I surfed the web again and this 'How to become an Audiobook reader' post from eHow was helpful. (more posts on the side tab too) As usual too many ideas!
It is another avenue to use to help create more markets for your book. There are so many new roads to wander off from this self-publishing path. As always, do the research, find what works for you, and make a plan. It's okay for the plan to change, as long as you still keep on your own path towards your own target.
I find myself wandering off sometimes and get discouraged, then I remind myself of what my goals are. Things take time - most writers are not over night success stories. Remember the important things.

Curses - Haunted By Them - Or Thrilled?
Labor Day is over, school is back in session, and another autumn is upon us. The cooler fall evenings get me in the mood to cuddle up with a good horror book, or watch one of the old detective or monster films.
That's right - I am that person. I love the autumn, love Halloween, and love a good scary story.
That's the reason my first novel BREAKING CURSED BONDS was released for this fall. Usually it is better to wait until January and avoid being plunged in with the fall glutton of new books on the market, but I really think my story belongs in the darker days of autumn.
The main story begins with an ancient book that tells the tale of how an ancient curse befell the De Gourgues family - back in 1565! A spiritual ceremony went wrong when an evil element was added to the mix. A curse was created - causing a history of deadly consequences.
If you like the subject of curses and the spiritual realm, then you may like an interesting website The Mystica I discovered. There is a post explaining curses which listed some of the history about how possession, voodoo mystical spells and the paranormal magic and how
they were used in different cultures. Of course there is a lot more out there for those who dare dabble with the supernatural.
Soon Halloween will be upon us, and we will watch our thrillers and read about witches and spells - but be warned, there are many out there who believe in supernatural with all the revelry. So be careful and always keep an open mind.
